The Government PU College in Gopanakoppa here has the distinction of being the first government college in the district to start PU science course. But the college, set-up in 1982, is yet to have its own building and lacks proper laboratory facilities.
The college is functioning from a government high school. The college which opens at 8am had to pack off by 2 noon to make way for school children.
The college is forced to suspend its functioning during SSLC exams.
As a result, the number of students getting admission to the college has been dwindling. This year, only 20 students have taken admission to the science course while the permissible intake is 80. Last year 14 took exams from the college of which only three passed. Most of the students failed in biology last year. Their dismal performace is easy to explain. The biology teacher’s post has fallen vacant for more than a year.
Meanewhile, the overall student strength has come down drastically. While it was 315 last year, this year it has come down to 190. The total permissible intake of the college is 480.
Further, the college has no proper loboratories to conduct physics, chemistry and biology practicals. The students themselves have to clear the benches and desks from the classrooms to convert it into laboratories.
Though the government had sanctioned a building for the college in 2007, it is still to be completed as the works are going at a snail’s pace. Further, no provision has been made in the new building for laboratories.
Area Corporater and college betterment committee chairman H R Dayagudi said they are making all efforts to put in place the basic facilities in the college for the benefit of local students.
A garden has also been planned on its premises, he added.
